Passport and Visa

  • Visitors to Hong Kong must hold a passport with a minimum validity of six months. Hong Kong offers visa-free entry to nationals from over 170 countries

  • We recommend checking with your travel agent for the latest entry requirements or visiting the website of the Immigration Department of the HKSAR at www.immd.gov.hk/eng/services/index.html.

  • We will assist delegates in obtaining visitor permits by providing support letters. (Please note that applicants are responsible for submitting their own applications for visitor permits.) Those requiring visas should contact their local Chinese Embassy or Consulate. 
  • Language

    • Chinese and English are the official languages. 

    Currency

    • The currency of Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar (HK$), which is pegged to the US Dollar within a band of 7.75 to 7.85. 
    • Most foreign currencies and travelers’ cheques can be exchanged easily at banks, hotels, and currency exchange services. Credit cards are widely accepted at major hotels, restaurants, department stores, and shops
    • The main payment methods in Hong Kong are Cash, Octopus Card, and Alipay/WeChat Pay. Apple Pay and Android Pay are also accepted. (Please note that some locations may not accept American Express.) 

    Tax

    • NO sales tax or VAT.  

    Transportation

    • An Octopus card, which provides access to ALL public transport (MTR, trams, buses, ferries, and taxis), can be purchased at the MTR Service Centre. The Tourist MTR 1-Day Pass offers one day of unlimited travel on the MTR (excluding the Airport Express Line). For more details, visit www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/tickets/day_pass_tourist.html.  

    Electricity

    • Hong Kong uses the power plugs and sockets of type D and type G, which operate on a 220V supply voltage and 50HzHowever, type G plugs are more commonly used and type D plugs may only be found in some older buildings. 

    Weather

    • Temperatures range from below 10°C in winter to over 30°C in summer. Check the weather forecast at www.hko.gov.hk before packing.

    • The local time in Hong Kong, China is GMT +8.
